Under the aegis of MNES, MEDA is implementing the Biogas Programme in Maharashtra
72 Community, 32 Institutional and 324 Night-soil-
based Biogas plants have been installed in Maharashtra. Under this
programme, following types of biogas plants can be installed :
a) Community Biogas Plants (CBP)
People from the community
benefit from 15 to 85 Cu.M. capacity
biogas plants for cooking purposes. Social institutes, village development
institutes, Gram panchayats, may have to take full responsibility for installing of the plant, its daily
operation and maintenance .
In addition to cowdung, feeding materials like sugar cane press mud, poultry waste
etc. can be used in this type of biogas plants.
b) Institutional Biogas Plants (IBP)
In institutes such as Panjarpol, Goshalas,
Dairies, Charitable Trusts etc. which have a large number of cattle heads producing adequate
quantities of cow dung, biogas plants can be
installed for capacities ranging from 15 to 35 Cu.M. The requirements and
problems of fuel can be solved within the organizations by installing these plants.
c) Night Soil Based Biogas Plants
 |
Like biogas plants based on cattle dung, night- soil- based biogas plants are also
used to generate biogas for cooking, lighting, pumping of water etc.
Even today in our country only 8-10 percent of the rural people are getting the benefits of
sanitation and disposal of human excreta. Installation of night- soil- based biogas plants
linked to community toilets is one of the best and easiest methods for the disposal
of human wastes. It not only solves the
problem of sanitation but also eliminates
the harmful bacteria. The generated
biogas can be used as fuel and the slurry can be utilized as
organic fertilizer. Under this scheme, 10 to
25 Cu.M. capacity plants of KVIC Water Jacket and fix dome model adopted by
NEDA in U.P. are eligible for financial assistance.

|
Large size plants of 35 to 45 Cu.M. designed by Sulabh
International and 35 Cu.M. plant designed by NEDA Lucknow, are eligible for
subsidy. The large size plants should be maintained and operated on ”Pay and
Use Basis for a minimum period of 20 years. The night- soil- based biogas
plants are constructed at dense localities in urban areas and villages, bus stands, railway stations,
pilgrimages, hostels, etc.
The user agency can send the proposal for sanction of subsidy / financial assistance along with
the following information :
-
Name and address of the
Institute, where the plant is to be installed.
-
Availability of feed material(cattle
dung / toilet users) and users of biogas plants.
-
Availability of land, water and electricity.
-
Undertaking by the institute
for installation, commissioning and operation and maintenance of the plant.
